Ancient ritual as a concentration tool

Come Saturday and all the DAVians assemble for the weekly havan. This is a yagnya that starts on the first day of school since its inception in 1970.

Students of 5 to 12 guided by the Principal and teachers perform this ritual with the chanting of the Agnihotra.

The DAVians say that they are proud of this unique knowledge of the vedic hymns which they learn automatically by attending the havan.

“This ‘havan’ or ‘holy fire’ is an ancient ritual which purifies the mind and the environment. This purification enhances concentration levels”, Mrs. Gowri, the teacher-in-charge, enlightens further on the havan,

The Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (DAV) movement is a living legend of our vedic culture and the Arya Samaj as enunciated by Swami Dayanand Saraswati. ‘ Dispelling ignorance and promoting knowledge’ is one of the ten principles of the Arya Samaj.

“This havan gives positive energy and generates positive vibrations in the atmosphere, especially required in the busy lives of students”, says the Principal, Dr. C. Satish.

The materials used here are sandalwood, ghee and some herbs. Every student gets his turn to perform individually too, a chance each of them await eagerly.

“Although we indulge in mischief and fun all day at school, we do experience a calming effect,” admit the participants. It’s interesting to see such traditions co-exist with present day modernity, remarks a mother who had come in.

Indeed a unique tradition at DAV.
