National Science Day Celebrations held at IIT-Madras

One of the premier educational institutions in Chennai – IIT Madras was the right venue for celebrating the National Science Day. This event was organized by Smt. Shanta and Kripashankar Charitable Trust.

T. Kripa Shankar, Managing Trustee of Smt. Shanta and Kripashankar Charitable Trust presided over the function and distributed the prizes to the winners of the various competitions held on this occasion.
Dr. T.S. Natarajan, Professor of Physics, IIT-Madras inaugurated the National Science Day and demostrated a few experiments in Physics. Dr. K. Srinivasa Rao, DST Ramanujan Professor, Sastra University, Thanjavur conducted the Mathematics Quiz and distributed the prizes.

Harikrishnan Ramani, Sourab, Nana Siddharth students of Chennai Mathematical Institute conducted the Physics Quiz and Dr. A. Ravi, Professor of Chemistry, MNM Jain Engineering College and Dr. S. Balasubramanian, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry, University of Madras conducted the Chemistry Quiz.

Around 300 students from various schools participated in this Quiz Competitions with 70 students receiving the prizes for Chemistry alone.

The Physics and mathematics Quiz was divided into rounds with a written elimination round followed by the oral final round. The Chemistry quiz started off on a unique manner with placards given to students and questions were asked.

The Chemistry, Physics and Maths quiz were held on 14th ,15th  & 28th of February, 2009 respectively.

For Chemistry & Physics,The quiz was divided into 2 groups – Juniors (Classes 8 & 9), Seniors (Classes 10 & 11) In Maths, the quiz was only confined to juniors.

In ChemistryQuiz, Rathnam School Nellore bagged the first prize. P.S.Senior, Mylapore won the second  place and Vidya Mandir, Mylapore came third in Juniors Category.

In Seniors Category,Vidya Mandir, Mylapore bagged the first followed by Sri Sankara Senior, Adyar and Bharat Dass Matric, Perungudi with second and third places respectively.

In Physics quiz, Rathnam School, Tirupati got the first prize, Vidya Mandir, Mylapore  bagged  the second . The third prize was won by the second team from Vidya Mandir and the Rathnam School Nellore.
In Mathematics quiz, Velammal Matriculation, Mogappair received the First prize, National Public School, Gopalapuram won the second  and P.S. Senior bagged the third.

Prizes for Physics were distributed by Dr T.S.Natarajan,Proffessor of Physics,IIT Madras.  Mr.T.Kripashankar handed over the prizes for Chemistry.
The teams participated in the quizzes definitely carried more knowledge back home.
