World Heritage Day is observed on the 18th of April across the globe since 1982. The marking of the day aims at creating awareness among the people to conserve and protect the cultural heritage world over.
In Chennai, there are many places that are of cultural importance. Heritage enthusiasts mention many historic sites and buildings in the city.
A few events are held this year in Chennai in connection with the World Heritage Day.
On April 18, a tour of the Bronze Gallery inside the Madras Museum, Egmore is planned by Namma Mylapore, a voluntary body. The walk is led by researcher and historian Dr. Chitra Madhavan. The tour can accommodate only 15 participants. Fee – Rs. 250. Contact nammamylapore@hotmail.com for registration.

The Chennai Chapter of INTACH conducts a guided walk inside Madras High Court on April 19 from 7.30 a.m. This is a free event. Contact N.L. Rajah at 9841013617.
Cycling Yogis take a cycle ride to DakshinaChitra on April 19, 2015. The ride starts at Santhome High Road at 5 a.m. and reaches DakshinaChitra at 7.15 a.m.
This year, one of the historic place, the Fort St. George turns 375 years. A walk inside Fort St. George is also held on April 19 from 6.45 a.m. This two-hour walk is led by journalist and history enthusiast Vincent D’Souza. This walk is free and open to all. Participant should gather at the parking lot opposite the main gate of the Fort at 6.30 a.m.
