Frisbee match on the beach

Next time you wake up early on a weekend and wonder what to do, why don’t you join Manu and his gang at the Gandhi Nagar ground or the Besant Nagar beach? Manu and his friends indulge in a game of throw and catch. They fling a flat, circular object. No, not a CD nor a plate …it’s a Frisbee! Their passion for the game started Chennai Ultimate Frisbee.

Ultimate Frisbee is a game that promotes sportsmanship. It is a fast growing sport. It is a game which involves speed and stamina. It includes two teams of seven members each. Manu explains “It is a fusion of Tennis, American Football and Soccer”. However, it involves no referees. Men and women can play this game together.

To play this game a special type of Frisbee is used. This disc weighs 175 grams. The pitch is 120 yards X 40 yards. It can be played on grass on in sand. It is a non-contact sport. Since there are no referees, there are no fouls. If a person is pushed, the game is paused and the Frisbee is given back to that person. Each player must stay at least one disc’s distance away from the next person. There are many types of throws utilized like the backhand, forehand and overhead throws.

Chennai Ultimate Frisbee held an Independence Day boot camp from the 15th to 17th of August at the Besant Nagar beach. Chennai Ultimate Frisbee is dedicated to teaching and promoting the sport of Ultimate Frisbee. “This game has become quite popular in Chennai”, says Manu. “Watching us enjoy the game, many people have joined in. We find our group becoming bigger through word of mouth.”
A national tournament will be held in December.
