On Feb. 6, students of class 9 B, Nungambakkam hosted a History, Mathematics and Sanskrit project, all under the topic: ‘Sun Worship’, as a part of their ISA (International School Award) Project.
The project had been named as ‘Aditya Ganitham’.
T. Venkatesan, the H.O.D of the mathematics department at Hindu Higher Secondary School graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. Mrs. Y. G. Parthasarathy, the dean and director of PSBB Group of schools, along with the Principal, Mrs. Valli Arunachalam and the Additional Vice Prinicipal, Mrs. Shyamala Shekhar were present at the occasion.
The project started with an introduction to the Sun Worshipers of the World with a blend of both basic and complex geometrical figures derived from the Sun – The main source of energy.
The students then gave a detailed explanation about the civilizations around the world and the different ways, in different places, the Sun has been worshiped. Incas, Egyptian, Chinese, Buddhist, Indian were the civilizations explained. Next, the scientific aspect was also introduced with the derivation of pie and how the sun helps the flowers to bloom.
A skit was also presented, written, directed and enacted by the students themselves.
The play was about Tintin and the prisoners of Sun, where Tintin and his comrades fooled the Incans that they made the sun disappear. The catch was it was a solar eclipse.
The skit went on to give the summary of the project. The students had to be on their toes throughout as Dr. Mrs. Y.G. Parthasarathy fired out of the box questions at the them, as far reaching as that of a discussion about the recent announcement made by the chief minister M. Karunanidhi that 14th January was to be celebrated as Tamil New Year’s Day.
The students, both, gave explanations as to why this could be right and wrong. They connected this with the earth’s revolution around the sun. Geography, economics, and science aspects also came out in such discussions.
At the end of all this, the chief guest declared that he had learned a lot through this initiative and had never thought this session would be such a great learning experience. He also requested the Dean to invite him to more such projects, done by the PSBBians.
The students were very happy and excited that their project had been a success story just before their mid-term examinations, starting on Monday. This exercise served as an exam fever-reliever for the students.
