Exons 2008 – Biotechnology expo organised by the Biotech Club of Sankara of Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School was held for two days on Nov. 3 and 4, 2008.
The expo was inaugurated by Dr.Sultan Ahmed Ismail, Soil biologist, Director of Ecoscience Research Foundations and HOD of Biotech dept, New college, Chennai.
The principal Smt.Subala Ananthanarayanan, welcomed the chief guest. Dr. Sultan Ahmed Ismail gave a keynote address on ‘Biotechnology-Promises and Perils’ which was an eye opening session for students and after that presentation, the chief guest released the biotech magazine ‘Shrishti – Genesis of a new era’ published by the Biotech club of Sankara. Sri. V.S. Dhandapani secretary of Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School received the first copy pf the magazine.
A presentation elaborating various streams of biotechnology taken up in Exons 2008 was presented by Ananthanarayan of Class 12. Students displayed models and charts covering various disciplines of biotechnology like 
Clinical microbiology and explained on Effect of neem on wound infections, pathogenesis of HIV, Cholera, Amoebiasis and microbial toxins.
Biochemical characterisation of microbes, differentiation of bacterial cell walls, Actinomycetes were also explained. In Immunology, topics covered were transplantation, types of allergic reactions, protocol for plant genome DNA and Protein and DNA bands were shown to students.
Applications of Stem cell technology and production of Monoclonal Antibodies were explained under animal biotechnology. Under Environmental and Applied Biotechnology many current issues were displayed using charts, posters and models. The topics covered were Ground Water Contamination, Land filling, Global Warming, Skin cancer caused due to UV Radiation, Sewage treatment and MPN technique test for water quality.
Under industrial biotechnology working model of industrial fermenter was shown and fermentation pathways involved in production of various commercial products were explained.
The Students with biotechnology and biology as their electives subjects from schools like P.S.Senior Sec.School, Chettinad Vidyashram, SBOA, Hindu Senior, Vidya Mandir, Sri Sankara Vidyashram were showered with excellent explanation of Students of Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School biotech students.
