On the 28th of October ’10, the Rotary Club, T.Nagar Branch organized a panel discussion group on the topic – Globalization in India. Will Indians call a halt? The event was held at the GRT Convention Centre between 6:30 pm – 9pm. Renowned persons in the field of Economics, Education, Business & Media were invited for the discussion.
Eight students from PSBB Nungambakkam, were the only school students who attended this programme.

This was moderated by Mukund Padmanabhan, Senior Associate Editor of The Hindu. Mr.Hari Shankar, a brilliant investor banker, Mr.Narayan Murthy, Former President of the Rotary Club, Mr. Inderjeet, a personal wealth manager, Mr.Ashok, Secretary of Municipal Administration of Tamil Nadu were all who formed the panel. Mr.Y.G. Rajendra, an educationalist from PSBB, and other prominent members from the Rotary Club were present at the venue. Mr. Ravi Bagwan from the United States was connected too through a video conference.

Most of them were of the view that globalization cannot be halted in India, but to reduce the negative impacts of globalization on the population all around the world and especially in India, inclusion of all irrespective of caste, creed, gender, race or colour is essential. Also, we have to concentrate more on the rural sector today to have a positive impact and not stop India’s growth by stopping globalization, as a major part of India’s Growth Story is related and because of Globalisation. Also, the youth of India shouldn’t entirely ape the west and use more plastic money, but go the traditional or rather rational and practical way of saving money.

“We have seen that India wasn’t hit very badly during the recession period only because we Indians have the habit of saving money for a rainy day. This practice should never die so that we can traverse through thick and thin, without getting affected to a large extent “, all the panelist voiced the opinion.

Another view shared at this event was that our banks should lend money to the Govt. and not vice-versa, like what happens in the US. Therefore, it is vital that we continue to save.

With the felicitation of all dignitaries present and the National Anthem, the event came to an end.
