Documenting local heritage and culture

You must have read the report of Student Reporter Madhumathy.C, about short films on heritage and culture.

This project, titled “Filmit”, is done INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) and Helen Hamyln Trust in London, UK. The project involves school children who are required to make interesting short films of 3-minute duration about their city’s local arts and culture.

In India 15 schools were selected from 3 cities, Chennai, Kolkata and Delhi. The five schools from Chennai were Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya, Bala Vidya Mandir, Sankara Senior Secondary School Adyar, Sri Sankara Vidyashramam and AMM Matric.

The project was a great experience for the students and as a culmination of the project, an award function was held at Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya on 12.02.2010.

Well-known classical dancer Dr. Padma Subramaniyam was the chief guest for the occasion. Dr. S. Suresh, Convener, INTACH-Chennai Chapter, Dr.Prema Kasturi, INTACH. Mrs. Indira Narayanan, member INTACH and Mr. G.Neelagantan Principal of Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya were also present.

The prize-winning films from the three cities were screened to the audience. The films covered a various range of topics such as traditional food, school, city, kolu festival, Pongal festival, karthigai deepam festival, marghazhi mahothsavam festival, etc.

Then the much-awaited prize distribution was held. Dr.S.Suresh told he was proud that out of the 3 cities, the maximum entries were submitted by Chennai. There was an uproar of clapping from the audience.

The teams were given prizes under various categories such as good music, good colour visuals, good dialogue, good direction, good screenplay, etc. Dr. Padma Subramaniyam presented the participation certificates to each and every participant of the Filmit program.

Then Dr.Prema Kasturi proposed the vote of thanks and our National Anthem was sung. This unique and interesting program ended with a group photo session involving all the participants. Each and every person who had witnessed this program, went home carrying a large amount of inspiration for making films.
