The 50th Anniversary of the Sir Ramaswamy Mudaliar School was conducted in their school premises on September 30, 2008. The School is built in memory of Sir Ramaswamy Mudaliar, a statesman who served Mayor of Madras as well as the last dewan of Mysore. It was for the economically backward students of which about 50 percent were first generation learners.
The celebration was a grand affair. The chief guest of the occasion was Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, the former President of India. The students were overwhelmed by the presence of Dr. Kalam. They were thrilled to witness a scientist and a superior personality.
At 3:30 pm, the head master of the school, Mr. G. Venkatachalam welcomed Abdul Kalam at the doorway. It was absolutely tight security for the chief guest. On his way to the auditorium, Dr. Abdul Kalam addressed all the students, parents and people cheering around him. As the auditorium could not accommodate all the students of the school, only the higher secondary class students, the media and a few business officials were allowed inside.
Initially, Dr. Kalam handed over the first copy of the souvenir to the trustee, Mr. M. A. Alagappan. The staffs of the school spoke followed by the inspiring speech of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam. “Students must help the unprivileged children to help India to become a developed nation” he said. He also clarified the qualities of becoming a scientist, saying that, “You must have an aim, quest of knowledge, hard work and determination”. He expressed that his book ‘Wings of Fire’ was a tribute to the teachers.
Dr. Kalam also considered his primary teacher Sivasubramaniya Iyer and Vikram Sarabhai (Founder of Indian Space Programme) for his success. Dr. Kalam showed gratitude towards the A.M.M Foundation for providing quality education for about 3200 students and for providing medical service to over 7 lakh unpreviledged patients and education to 11,000 students every year.
The golden jubilee festivity established a landmark towards the advancement of the Sir Ramaswamy Mudaliar School.
