Kathalaya’s Chennai Centre launched its Academy of Storytelling by conducting a two-day certificate course titled ‘The First Steps of Storytelling’. The workshop was organised on June 13 and 14 covering the basics of Storytelling.
Sixteen eager participants – parents, grandparents and people from diverse professional backgrounds such as Media, Insurance, Education, Speech Therapy, IT, Art and Dance attended the course. Kathalaya was launched in Chennai on April 18 this year at Saraswati Street, Mahalingapuram. Ms. Deeptha Vivekanandan is managing the Chennai centre.
The course was aimed at exploring Storytelling as a powerful educational and communication tool.
Geeta Ramanujam, Executive Director and Founder of Kathalaya, led the participants through the process of discovering the storyteller hidden within everyone.
Geeta Ramanujam narrated the story “ The Thirsty Crow” in different forms. There were around 15 adults from different professions. She stressed the importance of voice modulation, body language and gestures to improve the narrative quality of a story. Participants were also introduced to Storytelling styles such as Puppetry and Chitrakathas.
Kathalaya will conduct more such courses – for children and adults – on a regular basis, throughout the year. In August it plans to hold a five-day Intensive Course on Storytelling for those intending to learn more about the art form. Kathalaya can be reached at 98840 17569 or 4205 9716.
