Young people at the Model UNs

Young people across the world feel that there are global issues now, more than ever, and it is vital for the youth to think about these large scale problems such as poverty, nvironment, Inequality, Racial Discrimination among others.

Humanity must overcome these issues, feels the young community. With this as its purpose CHEMUN (Chennai Modal United Nations) is conducted every year for high school students, who are brought together to, brainstorm, discuss, negotiate, debate, support and pass resolutions to solve taxing global issues. It is a simulation of the United Nations, where students play the role of UN Delegates, representing their assigned countries.

There are altogether six committees namely, General Assembly (GA), DISEC (Disarmament and Security), Security Council, ECOSOC, Environment Committee and the Human Rights Council. High school students from different parts of the world come together and participate in this event, organized by the American International School Chennai. (AISC)

This three-day event was held at the AISC this year, from Oct. 29 to 31, 2010 from 8.30 am to 6 pm. With about 365 students participating each year, 4-5 honourable mentions are made from each Committee and three from the Security Council. The more experienced students get the chance to chair the committees, that is, to conduct the debates, and see that all rules and regulations are strictly adhered to.

Different MUNs are conducted each year all around the city –  SANMUN by Sri Sankara School, SISHMUN by Sishya, PSMUN by P.S. Senior Secondary School.

If your school hosts a MUN or participates in it, try your hand to be part of it or among the audience. The time is worth it.
