A feast for future scientists

Youth Hostel, India Nagar, Adyar, witnessed a thought provoking science exhibition held on July 3 and 4, 2010.
The organisers, Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) and Industrial Waste Management Association (IWMA) brought in students from 74 schools to the exhibition to present their projects /displays.

Three different levels – Junior, middle and senior were given topics revolving around Energy, Waste, Water, Climate and Environmental management.
Each school was represented by two students.

Most of the participants chose to emphasise on using of ‘renewable energy’ like Solar and Wind. There were notable projects like magnetic levitation transportation, energy from organic waste, vertical farming, hydrogen fuel cell and protection of ozone layer attracted the attention of visitors.

Subjects like global warming, role of science in disaster management, biomedical waste management and pollution control were exhibited with a clear message that it is everybody’s responsibility.

The exhibition included a demonstration on the principle of “Learn Science by Doing” conducted by Dr T.S. Natarajan , Professor, Department of Physics, IIT – Madras who was also the Chief Guest during the valedictory function.

Vishnu Jayapraksh, a class 12 student of Chettinad Vidyashram demonstrated his internationally recognised fuel cell experiment.

Three prizes were given in each category. Shri RM Jain Vidyashram in Junior , Chettinad Hari Shree Vidyalayam in the Middle and PS Senior Secondary school in Senior, won the first places.
