Breeze, shade, medicine, food, and a whole bunch of other benefits. Yes I am talking about our green friends stationed all over the earth. The annual day of Sir Sivaswamy Kalalaya was all about sacred plants. Officially the theme was “Kalpavruksh- Puviyin Pokkisham/ Earth’s treasure-trove”.
The program started at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, the 23rd of July, at The Music Academy. The prayer song was followed by the choir which sang a Hindi, an English, and a Tamil song. Three students of last year’s batch helped in teaching the English song and in teaching the instrumentalists. They were presented with a memento at the end of the program.
Then the audience was entertained by an English play which was all about a friendship between a tree and a young child. When he was young, the child used to swing on the branches of the tree. Then when he becomes older, he finds that he needs money to take care of his family. So he goes to ask for help form his friend the tree, which is more than happy to help his once little friend by giving away its apples. The man sells the apples and gets the money he wants. Then after a few years he again goes to the tree for help. This time he is faced with the problem of building a house as his wife had demanded for one. Again the tree is happy to help by giving away its branches and trunk.
Then after many years had passed, the man once found his way to the tree. And for the first time the tree looked sad. It said sadly that this time it had nothing to give to his friend. But his friend was now too old to eat apples, or swing on the tree’s branches or climb up its trunk. He just replied quietly that what he wanted now was nothing but a place to sit and rest. At these words the tree’s faced blossomed again with happiness and it replied that its stump was a perfect place for that. So the play ended with a note that even if man keeps on torturing trees, they keep on helping us at all times.
The play was followed by a Tamil drama whose participants were all kinds of animals, and plants. This play enhanced the knowledge of the audience about the medicinal values of various plants and animals. For example, an owl which was featured in the play, who had eye irritation, got rid of this problem by rubbing cucumber fruits on its eyes. Then a cuckoo bird finds out that it has a sore throat. It then ate pepper and its problem too, was solved at once!
In today’s world which mainly runs around modern medicine such as pills and tonic, it was a well- timed reminder for the audience that our native plants have a more effective medicinal influence on our body than other foreign and manmade medicines. They were reminded that chewing kandanthipili twigs cures leg pain, horse gram gives energy, rubbing herbs on the forehead cures head pain, eating fruits cures the strange noises that sometimes issue from our stomach, rubbing neem leaves on the skin cures itching, and so on.
The Tamil drama was preceded by the prize distribution function. The Chief Guest was Ms. Gayathri Sriram, Managing Director, UCAL Products PVT.Ltd. and UCAL Auto PVT.Ltd., Chennai. She gave away cash prizes and trophies to class toppers of last year and the school toppers in the 10th and 12th Board Exams. An annual report of last year’s activities of the school was read out by the Head Boy and Head Girl.
The second part of the annual day programs consisted of dance programs which were based on Krishna and the paarijaatham flowers, the sacredness of the tulasi, etc. The singers for the dance these dance programs were Ms. H.Sujatha, one of the music teachers of the school, and Ms. R.Aruna, Vice-Principal of the school. The role played by two of the school’s alumni in playing the mirudangam and violin for these dance programs was deeply acknowledged.
Finally it was time for the vote of thanks. All teachers, parent volunteers, student volunteers, school helpers, sponsors for backstage refreshments, and lighting and mike coordinators, were thanked by the Vice-Principal. When all teachers were called on to the stage, they were greeted with a huge applause from the students and parents alike.
What program is complete without our Indian National Anthem? So the Anthem was sung, and the much awaited event of our school came to an end for this year.
