On the occasion of Krishna Janmashtmi, matka breaking is a ritual that is in practice all over India. There was one here too in Chennai’s neighbourhood, HI-Tech Township, Gummidipoondi.
The celebrations began with bhajans at 9 p.m. followed by aarti at 11.45p.m. According to beliefs, Lord Krishna was born at midnight. Hence at 00:15 a.m. matka breaking was held with full safety. This is a ceremony in which a group of people try to break matka or earthern pot which contains loads of goodies.
For the participants, who were all male, it was very difficult to break the pot and at last after hard work it was broken by a team and it won the cash prize of Rs.10,000/- given by the chief guest Managing Director of SKI Carbon Black, Mr.S.S.Rathi.
