Student delegates debate on global issues

If you think that the international affairs are discussed only by bureaucrats and at global conferences, think again. The students in schools host model United Nations and discuss issues and pass resolutions! One of the top-ranking Model United Nations (MUN) conferences happen at Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School, Adyar, This year the school hosted its 10th edition of SANMUN on Aug. 21 , 22 and 23, 2015.

The first two days were resolved to debating and the third day was for resolution making and POE (points of entertainment). This year’s secretary general was Prarthana Prakash of 12th standard. Over 15 schools participated in this model UN.

This year’s edition of Model United Nations at the school aims at educating delegates about various issues that plague the world and to inculcate and replicate the diplomatic relations that exist among different countries across the globe.

Ms. Srividya Mahesh of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was the chief guest for the opening ceremony and the UN Greek consulate General Mr. N. Kumar was the chief guest for the closing ceremony.

There were five committees for the debate and the ones that were added exclusively this year were ECOFIN (Economic and Financial Committee) that discussed the implications of underground economies in the twenty-first century and WHO( World Health Organisation).

The best school award this year went to PSBB, Nungambakam.

Janani Balaji of class 10 (Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School), who participated in SANMUN said that the best part of it was POE. Arjun of class 10 (Sri Sankara Senior Secondary School) said that he enjoyed the formal debate held on Day 2.
