Youth explore in the Model United Nations at Chettinad Vidyashram

When it was an usual and relaxed weekend for many, it was a lot of excitement at the campus of Chettinad Vidyashram on the 21st and 22nd of July, 2012 . Girls, most of them dressed in short formal skirts, and some in formal trousers, and boys in full formal attires were chattering about their plans for the MUN.

Named ‘CVMUN’, the Model United Nations conducted by Chettinad Vidyashram saw over 200 ‘delegates’ from various schools across India. Mr. Takayuki Kitagawa, the Japanese council general, presided over the inaugural ceremony. The delegates represented over 50 countries and there were 6 committees namely – General Assembly , ECOSOC, UNEP, HRC, DISEC and Security Council.

The topics of the debates included defamation of religion, potential impacts of genetically modified food crops, the issue of weaponisation of space, the anticipated repercussions of the Europe Sovereign Debt, issue of overpopulation and exploitation among many others.

The debates by the delegates led to a lot of learning about the leadership skills, unity, team work and working of the UN. Also, resolutions were made in each committee and most of them were passed.

The MUN lasted from around 8 AM to 4 PM. Of course, a very yummy lunch was provided by the school.  But every delegate seemed to think that the point of entertainment which they had on the last day, when they made their chair and co-chair do funky things, was the best.
